Running a printing machine, or press, is the final stage of the entire process of printing. At this stage of the printing process, the operator requires to assemble the material to be printed, typeset, and transfer it onto metal plates. The printing operator requires to place the metal plates in the press. The basic responsibilities of an operator are to prepare the press for printing and attending the press as it runs. One of the most widely used printing processes is offset printing and it requires an offset printing machine. The printing-machine operators, also known as printing press operators, have more responsibilities than just running the machines. They are responsible to keep a close eye on the proper functioning of the machines. They are required to tend the printing machines when there are problems like jams and ink spots. These offset printing machine operators are also required to be lifelong learners and keep themselves updated with the new technology.

Printing machine operators should be enthusiastic about being a good learner and adaptable to new and changing technologies. This is so because they are required to tend the printing machine during the entire printing process and make sure that the printing is done properly.
Most of the printing operators receive their training on the job by working as assistants or helpers to expert operators. However, one can acquire the required qualification and training to be a skilled operator by serving a four-year apprenticeship. Individuals interested in being a printing machine operator and be an apprentice and attend classes, and work on the job. They can learn basic procedures and how to maintain and operate different types of printing machines. Later, they can specialize in one area of printing, for example, learning how to operate an offset printing machine.
Nowadays, interested individuals can also avail training in printing machines through various vocational or technical courses. There are many schools and community and junior colleges, which offer programs in printing equipment operation.
Printing press operators also require having mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills. There are high school courses that offer good preparation for the job and these include printing, physics, chemistry, mechanical arts, and electronics. At present, printing operators also need to have basic computer skills as new printing equipment work on different computer software.
